The Pest: Spider Mites
From apples to zucchini, no matter what types of plants you grow, it's likely something spider mites will attack. The most common spider mite, the twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), has been recorded on more than 300 species of plants, including all of the tree fruit crops, as well as small fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.
First Signs
Little yellow speckles on leaf surfaces. When you turn a leaf over, tiny, oval shaped mites, about pin head in size, are scurrying around. Their eggs, best seen with a magnifier, will be scattered around at random. Spider Mite eggs are all perfectly round, the same size, ranging from clear to amber in color.
Most Common Species
The Two Spot. The "two spot" Spider Mites are usually yellow/tan/greenish in color, and by maturity they grow two dark spots on their shoulders, one on each side. The larger the spots, |

the older the mite, or the more chlorophyll there is in the plant species they are feeding on. Spider Mites can float along with wind currents, or be carried by pets, clothing or infected plant material.
Special Species Notes: Adult females have the ability to go dormant for a time after the photoperiod (daily hours of light) shortens, then re-emerge to lay more eggs a few weeks after the photoperiod lengthens again. That's one reason Spider Mites keep reappearing crop after crop on indoor plants. |

Feeding only on spider mites and their eggs, spider mite predators breed twice as fast, making them our most popular mite control.
Actually carnivorous mites, each predator

feeds on about 5 spider mites a day, or 20 of their eggs. Sprinkle on 1 predator for every 20 spider mites, they'll breed from there.
Three individual species are available (see below), all priced the same. We strongly recommend the Triple Threat Mix of all 3 used together. This mix is good for conditions of 60-90% humidity, with temperatures 50º to 90º F. For warmer temps use a combination of PP & ML. For humidity levels as low as 40-45%, use ML alone.

PP (Phytoseiulus persimilis)
Performs well in temperatures ranging from 55-100° + F. and relative humidity levels of 55-90%.
NC (Neoseiulus californicus)
Performs well in temperatures ranging from 60- 90° F. and relative humidity levels of 60-90%.
ML (Mesoseiulus longipes)
Performs well in temperatures ranging from 65-100° + F. and relative humidity levels of 45-90%.
Application usually brings control in 5 to 6 weeks. Increasing application to a level of 1 predator to 5 mites can bring control in as little as 2 weeks. Recommended for greenhouse and controlled environment garden (CEG) use only. Not recommended for use outdoors.
