The Pest: Whitefly
First Signs:
Tiny, pure white "moths" resting on leaf surfaces. When the leaves of the plant are disturbed, these moth-like white flies quickly flutter up, then settle back down onto plants. |

Leaves may appear shiny with honeydew. A magnifier reveals clear-white "scales" (the pupae) on the undersides of leaves. All life stages of the Whitefly literally suck the water out of plant leaves.
Most Common Species:
Greenhouse Whitefly & Sweet Potato Whitefly. It's so difficult to be certain which species you have that we advise either consulting your county agent to be sure, or simply widening your predator strategy to cover both species - it's not uncommon to have both pests together.
Special Species Notes: What finally kills plants with a Whitefly infestation isn't usually the Whiteflies, but a black sooty mold that grows on their accumulated honeydew. By this stage, there will be clouds of Whiteflies when the leaves are disturbed. This is the time to rinse any shiny honeydew off the plants with a strong soapy water spray to prevent sooty mold from growing. |

Greenhouse Whitefly Control:
Whitefly Parasites (Encarsia Formosa)
Tiny Whitefly Parasites (Encarsia formosa) lay their eggs inside developing Whitefly pupae, so a Whitefly Parasite hatches out instead of a Whitefly. You'll need a magnifier to see them, but they spell death for Greenhouse Whiteflies, and they provide some limited control of Sweet Potato Whitefly as well.
For best results, apply four separate Encarsia formosa releases, two weeks |

apart at a rate of 1,000 to 3,000 parasites per 1,000 square feet of greenhouse area.
Your Whitefly Parasites arrive packaged, ready to hatch, glued to small, perforated cards which you hang among plant foliage. Parasites work best when temperatures average at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit (add daytime & nighttime temperatures together and divide by 2). Parasites emerge as adults within 2 weeks and fly off to hunt for more whitefly pupae to parasitize.

Sweet Potato & Silverleaf Whitefly Control:
Whitefly Predators (Delphastus pusillus)
| Whitefly Predators (Delphastus pusillus) eat from 150 up to 600 Whitefly eggs each and every day! It takes them about 30 seconds to eat a single Whitefly egg; slightly longer to eat a larva. They especially delight in the delectable qualities of Sweet Potato and Silverleaf Whitefly eggs. |
For Sweet Potato and Silverleaf whitefly control, make six independent Whitefly Predator releases, two weeks apart at the rate of 300 to 500 predators per 1,000 square feet of greenhouse area.
Simply shake Whitefly Predators out of the container they are shipped in, onto plant foliage. Best results are obtained when temperatures are kept between 65 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to their highly perishable nature, we only ship Whitefly Predators via overnight courier.

Enhanced Strategy for Whitefly Control:
Yellow Sticky Traps
| Whiteflies are strongly attracted to the color yellow. In fact, you really shouldn't wear yellow clothing around Whiteflies or you're almost sure to carry them from plant to plant. Yellow Sticky Traps are coated with a long-lasting sticky substance, and the Whiteflies just fly right to them! This is an excellent secondary tactic, especially when intense infestations need to be knocked down in a hurry. Also a must for monitoring whitefly levels in the greenhouse, alerting you to a pending severe infestation. |

Seabright Laboratories
Yellow Sticky Traps
Sticky traps are the first line of defense in any Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Yellow sticky traps attract many small flying plant pests, especially whiteflies and fungus gnats. Ladybugs, whitefly parasites and other beneficial insects aren't much attracted to the yellow color.
Traps give you early warning to potential pest problems as well as serving as a natural control. These heavy-duty 4 inch by 6 inch double-sided yellow sticky trap are marked with a grid for precision monitoring of insect infestations. Traps whiteflies as well as aphids. |

| Use in the greenhouse or outside. Place one trap per 25-50 square feet. Lasts all season, even in rain, or until completely coated with insects or dust. Includes twist tie for hanging. Pack of 5. |

Place one trap every 7 feet or at end of each row. Traps give you early warning to potential pest problems as well as serving as a natural control. Use one trap for every 9 square feet of garden area. 3 inch by 5 inch double-sided yellow sticky trap is marked with a grid for precision monitoring of insect infestations. Lasts all season, even in rain, or until completely coated with insects or dust. Each package contains 48 traps. |

Alternative General Purpose Whitefly Control:
Green Lacewings

Green Lacewing Eggs
Green Lacewing Larvae
For use against Aphids, Thrips, Mealybugs and Whiteflies.
Looking like tiny alligators, Green Lacewing larvae (Chrysopa rufilabris) voraciously attack almost any prey they can fit in their mouths. Within 3 or 4 weeks, the larvae hatch into adult Green Lacewings that feed only on pollen and nectar.
Available in both egg stage and larvae stage. Green Lacewing eggs hatch into Green Lacewing Larvae soon after release. Green Lacewing Larvae come 'ready to go' and begin eating pest bugs as soon as they are released.
Application: Since Green Lacewings search up to 100 feet for their first meal, eggs and larvae can be hand sprinkled almost anywhere. |

Green Lacewing eggs may be refrigerated for a few days at 38-45 F. to delay hatching, but be very careful not to freeze them.
Typical egg release rates range between 5,000 and 50,000 eggs per acre, depending on infestation levels. Typical live hatched larvae release rates range from 1,000 to 5,000 per acre, repeated every 2-4 weeks as required for control.
Suitable for outdoor, greenhouse and controlled environment garden (CEG) use.
