AgroDynamics® Grodan® Stonewool
or Rockwool
Stonewool products are made from basalt rocks and chalk, which come from the Earth. Mimicking Mother Nature's production of "angel hair" during volcanic activity, the Grodan Stonewool manufacturer heats rocks to 1600° C, to create lava. The lava is blown into a spinning chamber, which makes fibers similar to cotton candy. The fibers are packed into mats, from which Grodan cubes, blocks and slabs are cut. Small tufts of fibers are also produced and bagged as "Stonewool granulate". The products make excellent use of natural resources: one cubic yard of rock becomes 37 cubic yards of agricultural 'rockwool'!
Grodan stonewool was developed in Denmark in the early 1970's. The Grodan stonewool product is the main reason that most of the worlds greenhouse vegetables are now grown hydroponically. Grodan stonewool takes up 80-90% of it's own volume. It is wrapped in biodegradable plastic and the stonewool can be re-used in your garden to improve the aeration and waterholding capacity. Grodan stonewool has the proud distinction of going into space on Challenger in 1986 and is still being used in NASA's testing with hydroponics. |

The V-shaped individual "cell" within a multi block sheet allows effective air pruning. This encourages rooting within, rather than between, individual blocks. All multiblocks come in a sheet that fits a standard 10x20 flat.
AO3640 individual blocks measure 1.4 inches square by 1.57 inches tall and are prepunched with a small hole for seeds or cuttings. AO3640 blocks are sold by the individual sheet of 98 blocks which fits into any standard 10 inch by 20 inch propagation tray and by the case of thirty 98 block sheets, or 2,940 individual blocks.
AO5040 individual blocks measure 2.0 inches square by 1.57 inches tall and are also prepunched. AO5040 blocks are sold by the individual sheet of 50 blocks which fits any standard 10 inch by 20 inch propagation tray and by the case of thirty 50 block sheets, or 1,500 individual cubes. |

Growing blocks are used for direct sowing or "blocking on" of Mini and Multiblock grown plants. Blocks are available with and without pre-cut holes that will accomodate MiniBlock and Macro Plug propagation stonewool (above).
Grodan recommends you choose DM 8 or DM 10 if you are using the growing block on an ebb/flood table, or if you are potting the Grodan block up in LECA clay pellets or perlite. |

| The larger blocks are heavier and will give your plants a good weight anchor, so they do not fall over. These blocks also hold more water, so your plants have a water reservoir to fall back on if your pump or drippers fail. Grodan recommends the HUGO block if you like to grow your plant to full maturity in a block. |

Expert Growing Slabs
Grodan® growing slabs come wrapped in UV resistant polyethylene sleeves for ease of use. The special structure of Expert vegetable slabs provides a uniform environment allowing plant roots to rapidly explore all the available growing volume for a quick start. Water and nutrient distribution is also more uniform and provides a larger effective rooting volume than previously possible.
Grodan Expert vegetable slabs come in two sizes. The 6 inch wide slab is suitable for crops such as tomato, pepper and eggplant. The 8 inch wide slab is used for more water hungry crops such as cucumbers. Both sizes feature vertical fibers for fast draining of excess water. |

Grodan Growcube is a cube - like loose substrate, made of stonewool. Growcubes provide a perfect water buffer, with a very high water holding capacity. The water content in a pot of Growcubes is at a maximum of 85%. Air space is always present. |

| Not only are Growcubes lightweight, they also provide large air-spaces, since there are always open spaces around the cubes. Growcubes maintain their shape throughout cultivation. Due to these unique features the substrate typically has an air-space volume of 30%, depending on the size and shape of the pot. This means that long irrigation cycles are possible without causing lack of oxygen to the roots. |

Thanks to these qualities, Growcubes are an ideal medium for container cultivation of cut flowers. If desired, Growcubes can be used in a potting machine for added convenience.
Growcubes are absolutely free of disease, salts and weed seeds. This means that the grower knows he starts off with a clean worry-free medium, ready for hygienic production.
The homogeneous, airy structure of the Growcubes is particularly beneficial for complete and thorough rooting. |

The root system of every plant has complete access to the entire rooting volume of the substrate. Growcubes have no Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) sot he grower can take advantage of a nutritional program specifically tailored the the crop being grown. Having the freedom to determine the nutritional regime of the crop coupled with a large water buffer equips the grower with the tools necessary to optimize production. Growcubes are suitable for extended cultivation in pots or containers for several years. Because the optimum air and water balance (always having sufficient oxygen for the roots), large irrigation cycles are possible even in middle of winter.
