The Bluelab pH Truncheon is the only meter with replaceable Bluelab Contact Rings. Contact Rings effectively double the life of a pH probe.
The Contact Rings primary purpose is to protect the pH probe from contamination, the most common reason for meter failure. There are two types of pH probes - Single Junction and Double Junction. The Bluelab pH Truncheon features a Double Junction probe.
The reference cell of a single junction probe has a wick, or frit, that makes direct contact with the solution being measured. Single junction probes are easy and cheap to manufacture, but contamination will permanently affect the accuracy of the reference cell.
A double junction pH probe has a wick, or frit, that makes contact with a secondary chamber filled with the same material as the reference cell. This second chamber also has a wick that makes the direct contact with the solution being measured. Because there is a second chamber that acts as a buffer, contamination is slowed considerably.
The Bluelab Contact Ring acts as the second chamber and is easily cleaned or replaced at a very low cost. The contact ring stops contamination from getting into the reference cell and significantly extends the life of the probe. The Bluelab Contact Ring looks just like a "life saver" candy, so we recommend that you think of it as a "probe saver". Every Bluelab pH Truncheon comes with three well packaged replacement Bluelab Contact Rings. The contact rings should be replaced every six (6) months. |

The probe surface is where the instrument takes the reading of the solution. That information is then sent back to the electronic brain of the instrument. A calculation is then done by the micro computer and your reading is then displayed, accurately, one hopes. However, if the information sent back from the probe is inaccurate due to probe surface contamination then the reading will be inaccurate. Garbage in, garbage out.
Cleaning the probes is a very easy task and prolongs the life of the probes.
