Grub Control

Milky Spore Powder
Japanese Beetle
and Grub Control

St. Gabriel Laboratories' Milky Spore is a naturally occurring host specific bacterium (Bacillus popillae-Dutky). This product is lethal to a familiar destructive summer-time pest. It targets and discriminately works to attack the white grubs of Japanese Beetles.
Milky Spore Logo
The adult beetle feeds on fruits, flowers, shrubs, garden plants and the foliage of some field crops. At the immature beetle stage, the grub enjoys feeding on the roots of grass and other vegetation to include stems of plants.

Turf inoculation treatments / applications with MILKY SPORE puts in place an on-guard protective blanket on your lawn.Considered the weakest link in the chain and the most vulnerable point to introduce an infection, resident spores in treated turf are swallowed by grubs during their normal pattern of feeding; this starts the demise of healthy grubs. Milky Spore disease then begins to cripple the grub, and within the next 7-21 days will eventually die. As the grub decomposes, it releases billions of new spores.

Milky Spore is not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or man. The product is approved and registered with EPA, Milky Spore will not affect wells, ponds or streams.

The ideal way to combat area infestation is through organized community efforts. Large areas treated with Milky Spore can result in long term control.

Signs Of Grub Damage
In The Lawn

Japanese Beetle grubs cause extensive damage to lawns by feeding on grass roots. Grass turns yellow, then brown, and dies. Grubs chew off roots so that the grass is easily pulled up in pieces in your hands. You can roll it back like a carpet to reveal the grubs. If patches of dead grass appeared in your lawn late into summer, check for grubs.

How Milky Disease Works
Beetle grubs burrow through the soil, feeding on roots and other vegetable matter; they take in the spores along with particles of soil and other material. The spores germinate inside the grubs, and multiply rapidly in their blood. When the bacteria become very numerous in the blood they again form spores, completing the bacterial cycle.

Some diseases kill insects in a few hours or days, but the milky disease works slowly. Infected grubs may live for months after their blood has become loaded with spores, particularly if temperatures are low.

Sometimes, grubs that become infected late in fall will live until spring. After spores appear in the blood, grubs usually do not develop further; they eventually die.

Japanese Beetle Larvae

Japanese Beetle Pupae
Since moles and voles primarily feed on beetle grubs, milky disease will virtually eliminate these varmints from your lawn by removing their food.
How Milky Disease Affects Adult Beetle Populations
Applications of milky spore to lawns and parks are most effective in reducing adult beetle populations when it is done on a community basis. When all land in a community is thoroughly inoculated with milky-disease bacteria, it usually is not possible for large numbers of grubs to survive and transform into adults.

Treatment of a single homesite will protect turf from injury by grubs. It may not protect against adult beetles that fly in from gardens, orchards, untreated turf, or other untreated areas.

Directions For Use
Milky Spore Powder:
Apply one level measure teaspoon of Milky Spore powder on top of grass in spots every four feet in rows four feet apart. Use 10 ounces per 2500 square feet (50 feet by 50 feet) or 40 ounces per 10000 square feet (100 feet by 100 feet). Treat your lawn any season of the year when the ground is not frozen. Water lightly after application to soak spores into soil. Areas between spots will be inoculated naturally. Highly efficient control cannot be expected until the entire area is inoculated. Milky Spore has been known to last 15 years or longer with one application.

Make homemade dispenser by attaching (duct tape works great) one pound coffee can with 15 nail holes to 4 foot stick six inches from bottom.

St. Gabriel Laboratories manufactures milky spore to the USDA specifications of 100 million spore of bacillus popilliae per gram of product.

Milky Spore Frequently Asked Questions

What is Milky Spore?
Milky Spore is a naturally occurring bacterium that affects Japanese Beetle, June Beetle and certain other common lawn grubs.

How fast does it work and how long does it last?
Milky Spore begins working as soon as it is applied as long as grubs are feeding. Once grubs are infected they will multiply the Spore by several billion times and spread it further. In warm climates good control can occur in one to three years. In colder areas like New England, three to five years. Once established in a lawn, Milky Spore has been known to last 15 to 20 years.

Will freezing ruin the Spore? What about heavy rain?
No, Milky Spore is not affected by freezing or other adverse environmental conditions. Heavy rain may wash away newly applied Spore dust necessitating retreatment.

Will fertilizer or chemical pesticides affect the Spore?
No, Milky Spore is not affected by fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or other lawn chemicals. They may all be applied at the same time.

Can I use Milky Spore in the vegetable garden?
Yes, Milky Spore is harmless to food crops. It is not a chemical pesticide. It may be used in gardens, around pools and wells.

Should children and pets be kept off the treated lawn?
Milky Spore does not affect pets, beneficial insects, fish, bees, birds, other animals, plants, or man. It is not a poison.

Can I mix the Spore in water and spray it?
No, the Spore dust must remain concentrated and applied in spots. Do not apply Milky Spore Powder with fertilizer spreaders or grass seed spreaders.

Can I cut my grass after applying the Spore?
No. Do not mow your grass until the Spore has been watered into the soil by rain or hose for 15 minutes or longer.

What if I treat my yard and my neighbor doesn't?
Your lawn will be protected even if you are surrounded by untreated property. Eventually, the Spore may creep next door into adjacent areas by natural movement.

Won't beetles fly in from my neighbors yard?
An adult beetle feeds only during it's first two weeks. By the time they fly in from adjacent areas, any grubs laid will be affected by the Spore.

What about moles?
Eliminating grubs with Milky Spore may cause moles and skunks to feed elsewhere. Unfortunately, they may head for your neighbor's untreated yard instead. Milky Spore does not affect moles, it simply reduces their food source.

Can I have too many grubs?
If you are rapidly losing your lawn due to too many grubs, more than 10 per square foot, you may be wise to use an insecticide along with Milky Spore.

How do I know if I have beetle grubs?
Grubs feed on the roots of your grass which can become brown and die. Simply lift the dead grass and look for white larvae curled into the shape of a "C" about the size of a penny. Active grubs can completely destroy a lawn. Use Milky Spore for safe, long-lasting control.

Do beetle larvae feed more aggessively in Fall?
Yes, grubs in fall are in the first instar stage and are feeding for growth to store body fat for winter. In the spring, grubs reach 3rd instar prior to molting and do not require as much food.

Are grubs infected by Milky Spore in spring when rising to the surface following hibernation?
Grubs become infected by swallowing a spore. They do not become infected by rubbing up against spores or passing through them. Since grubs feed less in Spring, the incidence of infection is not as great as in fall.

What are the application rates for Milky Spore?
Milky Spore powder must be applied in teaspoon amounts every four feet in rows four feet apart creating a grid pattern.

What is the shelf life of Milky Spore?
Milky Spore has unlimited shelf life as long as it is stored in a cool dry place.

What if I get Milky Spore in my eyes?
What if I breathe it in?
No cause for concern. Milky Spore is not a chemical pesticide. The only thing that Milky Spore affects is Japanese Beetle Grubs.
