IMPORTANT TIPS REGARDING
HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE BULBS!
HID grow light bulbs should be replaced at regular intervals before the bulb burns out. As these bulbs age, their lumen output decreases. While it is barely noticable to the human eye, plant growth will slow considerably. The general recommendation is to replace metal halide (MH) bulbs on an annual basis and high pressure sodium bulbs (HPS) every two years. Keep recently retired bulbs as spares in case of future bulb failure.
HID grow light bulbs should not be burned 24 hours per day. Plants, like people, need their rest... and darkness is an important part of photosynthesis. Ideally, popular greenhouse veges like peppers and tomatoes prefer a 16 hour day period. Some plants, like chrysanthemums, will only bloom if they receive less than 13 hours of light each day. Burning HID grow lights continuously also increases the chance of bulb rupture. Treat your plants right... they won't grow as well without the night! |
